Sleeping in the trulli is truly a unique experience, with the stonework providing an almost primordial strength and special cosiness.Once the homes of peasants, the trulli have become today elegant and welcoming refuges for the world’s most discerning travellers.The walls, in places more than a metre thick, ensure comfortable nights for every season. The variations in the stonework, with its rough stretches and its niches present a fascinating play of light and shade, so as to generate a relaxing and discreetly timeless ambiance, reflecting always a contemporary and sober sumptuousness.

The experience of sleeping in Trulli La Pietraia is an invitation to a world of calm, in which to recover the freedom of one’s personal time-frame, to immerse oneself in the beauty of the place and to wrap oneself in an atmosphere of elegant relaxation; to have a restorative swim in the pool looking out on to the countryside and then to luxuriate in the leisure area beneath the boughs of a majestic olive tree or take a stroll through the olives as far as the ancient trullo.You can pick fruit for your breakfast from the fig-trees and plum trees in the garden, or perhaps laze in the cultivated area between the aromatic seedlings of basil, thyme and mint or pluck the succulent Regina cherry tomatoes, a very sweet native species and perfect accompaniment to a frisella.

Indulge yourself in savouring the early produce of the garden in a home-made dish of orecchiette, specially prepared by our excellent cook for an al fresco dinner, accompanied by a good local wine, amid the chattering of the crickets, the scented grasses and the gentle candle-light, while the sun sets in the background over the bay.The site of Trulli La Pietraia measures two hectares, with 110 olive trees, many of which are age-old and offer Puglia’s best varieties, such as the Ogliarola which produce a first-class but limited quantity extra-virgin oil with a very low level of acidity. Every November they are harvested, still by hand, with the olives crushed in a nearby press and the oil cold-extracted. Samples of this produce we are happy to offer as a memento to our guests of their stay at Trulli La Pietraia.In Trulli La Pietraia the mornings are magical, as a complete peace reigns around the pool, the only sounds being the swooping of the swifts as they catch at the water and the waking of nature all around. This is the ideal moment, should you wish, to have a restorative session of yoga, perhaps in the meadow among the century-old olive-trees.
